How KVM virtualisation works for a Linux VPS in India, how it differs from container VPS, and what to check before buying one.
A KVM VPS is a virtual machine with its own kernel, its own set-aside memory and its own disk space, so it acts like a dedicated server under your full control. This guide covers what KVM means for a Linux VPS in India, the checks to make before buying one, and the steps to set it up once it runs. Current plans and prices appear on the VPS plans page.
Browse VPS plans — billed hourly, with a GST invoice, and running within a minute.
KVM, short for Kernel-based Virtual Machine, is virtualisation built into the Linux kernel itself. Each guest under KVM is a complete virtual machine: it starts its own operating system and kernel, and gets its own virtual processors, memory and storage, kept apart from other guests on the same host.
This differs from a container-based VPS, such as OpenVZ or LXC, where all customers share one host kernel. A container VPS works for simple sites but restricts what you can alter: kernel version, kernel modules, certain firewall or VPN configurations, and nested containers all depend on the host. With KVM, you decide these yourself.
For a web app, API, database, Docker set-up or trading bot on a Linux VPS in India, KVM is the sensible default: whatever runs on a self-managed Linux server will run on a KVM VPS. You won't find midway through a project that a kernel feature or VPN is blocked by the platform.
What determines how quick and reliable a KVM VPS feels sits below the virtualisation layer: whether memory is set aside or oversubscribed, what storage backs the disk, how the network reaches your users, and what happens if a host goes down. Those points form the checklist below.
Put the same questions to every provider and compare the written answers:
Each NABHCLOUD server is a complete KVM virtual machine, running on Apache CloudStack over hosts that use AMD EPYC processors and ECC memory for reliability. Memory assigned to your VM is never oversubscribed, and ballooning is switched off.
Storage runs on enterprise-grade NVMe across replicated volumes, meaning a single disk or host problem does not require restoring from backup. Live migration and automatic VM restart after a host outage are active for every server. Both the smallest and largest plans run on identical hardware, identical NVMe storage and the identical network setup.
Root access comes standard, along with a VNC console in the browser, one-click OS reinstalls and a complimentary snapshot. Each virtual machine gets a dedicated public IPv4 address bound to its network card; this address remains assigned until you delete the server. Standard inclusions are a 1 Gbps network port and DDoS protection through Cloudflare Magic Transit.
The panel and API let you resize vCPU count, RAM and disk space independently; storage can expand but will not shrink back down.
Servers run from our Noida datacentre in Delhi NCR and go live within a minute. Current plans and prices, including the 18% GST and the choice between hourly billing with a 1-hour minimum or monthly and longer terms at a lower monthly rate, are shown on this page. Every paid order comes with a GST tax invoice.
Our Linux images include Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, Debian 12, AlmaLinux 8 and 9, Rocky Linux 9 and CentOS Stream, all ready for cloud-init, along with stack images for WordPress, LAMP/LEMP, Docker and cPanel/WHM or Plesk under your own licence. You may also upload a custom image or bring your own ISO.
Pick a plan on the VPS plans page, or set an exact mix of vCPU, RAM and NVMe on the custom server builder, then select a Linux image. Start with hourly billing if testing.
Connect over SSH as root and install operating system updates before anything else.
Add your SSH key, set up a standard user with sudo rights, disable password logins, and open only the ports your application needs in the firewall.
Set up your web server, database, Docker or application as needed.
Take a snapshot from the panel before major changes, and copy your data off the server on a schedule, for example to S3-compatible object storage.
KVM-based. Every cloud server is a hardware-isolated KVM virtual machine on Apache CloudStack, with its own kernel, set-aside memory and NVMe disk.
A KVM VPS is a complete virtual machine with its own kernel, so you can change the kernel, load modules and run Docker or a VPN as on any server. An OpenVZ or other container VPS shares the host's kernel, which limits these choices.
Yes. Docker, WireGuard, OpenVPN, reverse proxies and API gateways all run on a KVM VPS for your own applications. A Docker stack image is also available if you want it ready at first boot.
Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, Debian 12, AlmaLinux 8 and 9, Rocky Linux 9 and CentOS Stream, plus stack images for WordPress, LAMP/LEMP, Docker and cPanel/WHM or Plesk under your own licence. You can reinstall any image from the panel or upload a custom one.
Current plans and prices, before 18% GST, are listed on this page. Each plan includes DDoS protection, a 1 Gbps port, a public IPv4 address and a free snapshot. Longer billing commitments bring the monthly rate down.
Set aside. The memory on your plan is allocated to your VM and not oversubscribed, with no ballooning, running on ECC memory.
Yes. Resize vCPU, memory and disk independently through the panel or API. The server reboots a single time but keeps the same IP address and all data. Storage can only grow, never shrink.
