Run Vaultwarden on NABHCLOUD App Hosting

Vaultwarden is a lightweight server that speaks the same language as the Bitwarden apps. Your passwords stay on a server you control, while you log in through the official Bitwarden browser extensions and mobile apps.

Deployment needs the Starter plan or above. Current plans and prices are shown on this page, before GST. HTTPS, a custom domain and a GST invoice are included, and the server sits in our Noida data centre. View hosting plans

Common uses for Vaultwarden

  • A password vault for a household or a small team
  • Shared organisation vaults for company-wide logins
  • One place for passkeys and TOTP codes
  • Keeping login secrets away from third-party cloud vaults

What the installer does

Once you start the install, Vaultwarden comes up on HTTPS and the admin-panel token is written to the Login Details section of your control panel. Open the web vault to register your account, then set the Bitwarden apps to point at that same app address under the self-hosted option.

  • You get a dedicated address on our platform, running on HTTPS from the moment it starts
  • Any generated passwords are stored in Login Details, so you can look them up again later
  • It runs on an always-on private app server; there is no need to touch SSH or Docker
  • Logs, restarts and mapping your own domain are all handled from the NABHCLOUD panel

About Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden is a compact Rust application that implements the Bitwarden server API. It was formerly known as bitwarden_rs. Because the official Bitwarden extensions, desktop app and mobile apps all connect to this same API, nobody on your team needs to learn a new tool. Note that this is a community project, not built or supported by Bitwarden Inc., and it is released under the AGPL licence.

Everything it stores lives inside one data/ directory. That folder holds db.sqlite3, where vault entries sit encrypted on the client side so the server itself only ever sees ciphertext, along with file attachments, Send items, a cached icon set and the RSA key used to sign login tokens. If this folder is lost, the vault is lost with it, and no one, including NABHCLOUD, can reset a master password.

New account registration stays open until you turn it off. Create whichever accounts you need, then set SIGNUPS_ALLOWED=false, or bring in further users through an organisation invite instead. The /admin route itself will not respond until an ADMIN_TOKEN value exists; check Login Details on your app's page first, and if nothing is set, generate your own token (an Argon2 hash is the recommended format). Since WebAuthn and passkeys only work over HTTPS in the browser, and your app address already runs on HTTPS, this is covered automatically.

Getting Vaultwarden running step by step

  1. Install the app and load the vault. Pick Vaultwarden from the app store, install it, then open the address shown in your panel. The web vault appears with a Create Account option.
  2. Create the first logins. Sign up yourself and anyone else who needs access, each with a long master password, then disable signups so no one else can register through the public URL.
  3. Connect the Bitwarden apps. Inside the Bitwarden extension or mobile app, open the login screen's region picker, select self-hosted, and type in your app's address. After logging in you will find an empty, ready vault.
  4. Arrange backups. Export db.sqlite3 using the .backup command built into sqlite3, rather than a raw file copy of a running database, and archive the rest of the data/ folder alongside it. Store that copy in NABHCLOUD object storage or on a separate machine.

Choosing the right plan size

WorkloadPlanNote
A household or a team of roughly ten peopleStarterVaultwarden runs as one lightweight process, so the Starter plan is usually more than enough.
An organisation of a few hundred users sharing vaultsStarterStarter still handles this comfortably. Keep an eye on disk space if attachments pile up.
The same server also hosts other apps, such as Gitea or NextcloudProUpgrade so the other apps have headroom; Vaultwarden on its own would not need it.

Smallest plan that fits Vaultwarden

The Starter plan gives you 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 20 GB of disk, with room for up to 2 apps, so Vaultwarden can run alongside your own code on one server. Billing is monthly, and prices shown exclude 18% GST.

Vaultwarden hosting FAQ

Will the real Bitwarden apps connect to it?

Yes. Pick the self-hosted option inside the Bitwarden app and type your app's address in as the server URL.

What happens if the server goes offline?

The Bitwarden apps hold an encrypted local copy of your vault, so you can still view saved passwords even without a connection.

Is this the same product as Bitwarden?

No. It recreates the Bitwarden server API and works with the genuine client apps, but Bitwarden Inc. has no part in supporting it. Certain paid Bitwarden features come free here, while some enterprise-only features are not available.

What exactly needs backing up, and where should it go?

Back up the entire data/ folder, pulling db.sqlite3 out through the sqlite3 .backup command. Store the copy somewhere other than this same server, since a backup on the same disk is useless if that disk fails.

How does the one-click install work?

Select an app from the store, choose which app server to deploy it on, and click Install. It is assigned its own HTTPS address, any required passwords are generated and shown to you once, and the app is live within a couple of minutes.
