About Open WebUI

Open WebUI first appeared as a simple interface for Ollama, before expanding into today's general-purpose chat tool. It works with any service that exposes an OpenAI-compatible API, and can also talk to Ollama directly once OLLAMA_BASE_URL points at it. Its data directory stores saved chats, prompts, any files you've uploaded, and the accounts of each user, with the SQLite database webui.db as the core piece.

You can point it at the API provider of your choice by setting OPENAI_API_BASE_URL and OPENAI_API_KEY within the app's settings, and you can add several connections at once, all appearing together in a single model-selection list.

One point worth knowing before offering document chat to anyone else: uploading your very first file prompts Open WebUI to load an embedding model so it can be indexed, which takes noticeable time and memory and can make that initial upload look frozen. Later uploads are faster. Remember that whoever registers first gets administrator rights, so claim that account before sharing the link with others.

Setting up Open WebUI on NABHCLOUD

  1. Install the app and open its address, then register the first account. It is granted admin rights without any extra step.
  2. Go to Settings, then Connections, and enter the API key for your chosen model provider against the configured endpoint. Once verified, the model list should populate.
  3. Decide, under Admin settings → Users, if newly registered accounts need your sign-off before they can use the app. Leaving registration open on a publicly reachable address lets anyone sign up and run up usage charges billed to you.
  4. Test it out by uploading a brief PDF and asking a question about its contents. The first attempt will pause briefly while the embedding model is loading.

Frequently asked questions about Open WebUI hosting

Is a GPU required?

No. Open WebUI only provides the interface; the actual models run on whichever API, such as OpenAI's, that you connect it to.

Is it usable by my whole team?

Yes. The administrator can invite other users and control which models each of them can access.

Can I plug in my own Ollama instance?

Yes, point it at your own Ollama connection by adding its address. If you'd rather keep everything, including the model, on one box, try our combined Ollama and Open WebUI app instead—just note it's CPU only.

Where is my chat data stored?

Your conversations sit in the app's own storage area on your server, kept in a file called webui.db plus a folder of uploads. The provider behind whichever model you're using also receives your chat text, so check that provider's policies too.

How does the one-click installer work?

Select an app from our store, choose which server should host it, then hit Install. Within a minute or two it is live with its own HTTPS address, and any passwords it needs are created automatically, revealed just the once, and saved for you to check again later.
