Buying a VPS in India: A NABHCLOUD Guide

Things to check before buying a VPS in India — RAM, NVMe, DDoS defence, billing, GST invoicing, latency — and how to set one up fast.

Back to guides

A VPS is a virtual server with its own operating system, root login and resources set aside just for you. Setting one up takes minutes, but picking the right one takes a bit more thought. This guide covers what to weigh up and how ordering works for VPS hosting in India on NABHCLOUD.

Current plans and prices, including GST details, are shown on this page. Deployment runs on hourly billing with GST invoicing, and setup finishes within a minute. Browse VPS plans.

Begin with the job, not the catalogue

List out what the server needs to run — a WordPress site, a game server, MT4/MT5 platforms, a database, a bot or a staging setup. That workload tells you how many vCPUs and how much RAM to pick, and whether Linux or Windows fits better.

Not sure yet? Pick a small size on hourly billing. A KVM-based VPS can be resized without rebuilding, so starting too small just means a restart, not a full move. The plan-sizing notes on the VPS page match common jobs to server sizes.

Points to weigh up across VPS providers

The sticker price rarely tells the whole story. Line these up before deciding:

  • Dedicated vs shared RAM: dedicated memory is actually there when your app calls for it, unlike oversold RAM.
  • Storage type: NVMe drives respond far faster than SATA SSDs, which matters for databases and high-traffic sites.
  • What's bundled: a public IPv4 address, 1 Gbps port speed, snapshots and DDoS defence are sometimes billed separately elsewhere.
  • Traffic terms: metered outbound data can end up costing more than the server itself. Incoming traffic should be free, and outgoing should run on fair use rather than a meter.
  • DDoS handling: check if attacks get filtered out or if the IP simply gets dropped from the network until the attack passes.
  • Billing options: see if you can pick hourly charges, a monthly rate, or a multi-year commitment on the very same machine.
  • Invoicing: pairing a GST invoice with your GSTIN allows a registered business to set off input tax credit.
  • Datacentre location: a server inside India keeps response times low for Indian visitors and keeps data under Indian law.

Picking an operating system

Linux distributions — Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky and others — suit web hosting, containers, databases and most development work. Windows Server fits RDP access, MT4/MT5 trading platforms and software built only for Windows; it requires a minimum of 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. The Windows licence comes bundled on Windows VPS plans and general-purpose plans, as well as on Forex VPS and gaming server plans.

Ready-made images for WordPress, LAMP/LEMP stacks, Docker, cPanel/WHM and Plesk cut out the first hour of manual setup.

Choosing a billing term

Hourly billing works on pay-as-you-go terms with a 1 hour minimum charge per server — suited to testing, events and short-lived projects. A monthly term brings the cost down by 30% against the hourly rate, and committing for 12 months brings it down by 44%. Our guide comparing hourly and monthly billing works out where the switch-over point sits.

Full pricing across every size and term, before GST, is listed on our pricing page.

For a one-off need, renting hourly and shutting the server down afterwards can be simpler than committing to a term — our guide to renting a VPS in India sets hourly, monthly and yearly rental side by side. Placing an order with NABHCLOUD

  1. Sign up

    Register using your email address.

  2. Finish eKYC once

CERT-In rules require hosting providers to confirm customer identity. This is a one-time step per account, done with Aadhaar/DigiLocker or another ID document.

  3. Set size, OS and term

Select a ready-made plan or build a custom configuration, pick an operating system image, and choose anywhere from hourly billing to a 36-month term.

  4. Pay and go live

Pay through UPI, card, net-banking or wallet balance. The server is typically ready within a minute, with its IP address and login details shown in the control panel.

Once the server is running

Capture a free snapshot before making any significant change, apply operating system updates, and shut any ports you aren't using. If the workload outgrows the plan, resize the VM or switch to a longer billing term directly from the panel, with no rebuild needed.

Common questions

How quickly can I get a VPS running in India?

Once the one-time eKYC check is complete, a new VPS typically starts within a minute of payment. The control panel then shows the server's IP address, along with the login details needed to access it.

Do I need to register a company to buy a VPS?

No. Individuals as well as companies can buy one. Adding a GSTIN lets a business get a tax invoice under GST and set off input tax credit against it.

Can I scale up a VPS after buying it?

Yes. A KVM-based VPS can be resized to add vCPU, RAM or storage from the control panel, and the server keeps its IP address and existing data.

Is a cloud server the same thing as a VPS?

With us, yes — a cloud server is a KVM virtual private server with dedicated RAM and NVMe storage, billed either hourly or on a fixed term.

Which operating system is right for me?

Linux distributions — Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky and others — suit web hosting, containers, databases and most development work. Windows Server suits RDP access, MT4/MT5 platforms and Windows-only software, and calls for a minimum of 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. The Windows licence is bundled in on Windows VPS and general-purpose plans, and also included on Forex VPS and gaming server plans.

Should I go with hourly or monthly billing to start?

If you're not sure, pick a small size on hourly billing, which carries a 1 hour minimum charge per server. A monthly term cuts the cost by 30% against the hourly rate, so it's worth switching once the server runs for most of the month.
