Managed vs Unmanaged VPS in India: How to Choose

See how managed and unmanaged VPS hosting differ in India, what we still look after, and how to pick the right option for your team.

Guides

A VPS has two layers. On an unmanaged plan, you look after everything that runs inside the server. On a managed plan, someone on the provider's side takes care of that layer for you. This guide shows exactly where that line is drawn, which type suits which kind of user, and what you should confirm before signing up for either kind of VPS hosting in India.

Browse our VPS plans — billing by the hour, GST-ready invoices, and a server ready within a minute.

What counts as managed and what counts as unmanaged

A VPS always has a layer the provider controls: the physical machines, the virtualisation, the network, protection against DDoS attacks, and your invoices. What differs is who looks after the layer above that — the operating system and everything running on it.

On an unmanaged, or self-managed, plan that upper layer is entirely in your hands: the OS, patches, firewall rules, your web server or application, and your own data copies. On a managed plan, the provider shoulders part of that load — typically patching the OS, hardening the server, offering a control panel, and backing you up on whatever software you run on it. Because no fixed definition of "managed" exists across the industry, always ask a provider exactly which tasks inside your server they will handle.

  • Unmanaged means you hold root or administrator rights and full control over the server; whatever runs on it is your responsibility to manage.
  • Managed means the provider shares responsibility for a defined set of tasks, and their time is usually built into the price.
  • Either way, the provider never stops looking after the physical hardware, the network, and the platform beneath your server.

Pick unmanaged if this sounds like you

Self-managed tends to work well when you or a colleague is at ease with a command line or a Remote Desktop session:

  • You work as a developer, sysadmin, or agency, and setting up servers is routine for you.
  • You need software or configuration choices that a managed plan typically blocks — things such as a fully custom software stack, a dedicated game server, a VPN setup, or software for trading platforms.
  • You want the lowest possible running cost and have no use for admin hours you won't call on.
  • You are running short-lived tests or projects, where being able to rebuild an hourly server matters more than support.

Pick a managed option if this sounds like you

When no one on your team wants to keep a server running, paying for that upkeep usually costs less than downtime does. Before shopping for a managed VPS, pause and check whether you even need a server in the first place:

  • If your real goal is simply to get a website or app live — not to operate a server — our application hosting platform can roll out a Git repository or a one-click app like WordPress or n8n, over HTTPS, without handing you a server to look after.
  • If a server of your own is what you need, but setting it up isn't something you want to do yourself, our automated setup assistant takes care of sizing, deploying, and configuring it based on a plain description you provide, then hands you the finished server.

What NABHCLOUD actually gives you: self-managed, with support nearby

A NABHCLOUD VPS is self-managed: you're given root or administrator access, a console reachable from your browser when SSH or Remote Desktop refuses to connect, one-click reinstalls of the OS, and a free snapshot. Platform, network, and billing support comes included, handled by our team.

If you'd rather skip the setup work, our automated setup assistant (currently in beta) handles installing and configuring the usual stacks, at no added cost, including:

  • Windows Server with IIS and RDP
  • cPanel/WHM
  • LAMP/LEMP
  • WordPress
  • Docker hosts
  • MT4/MT5
  • Game servers

Besides that, it covers resizing, snapshot management, and general troubleshooting, then hands you over to a human support engineer whenever needed.

Every plan comes with a public IPv4 address plus a 1 Gbps network port, Cloudflare-powered DDoS protection, and one snapshot. Current plans and prices for our smallest general-purpose VPS are shown on this page, in INR; billing runs on a per-started-hour basis, with every server carrying a minimum charge of 1 hour, excluding 18% GST, or you can move to monthly billing or a longer commitment instead.

Questions to put to any provider that offers "managed"

Get these answered in writing, whether you're paying for management or relying on a self-managed plan:

  • Exactly what does the provider do inside your server — OS patching, security updates, software installs, or help with your app's issues?
  • When an update breaks the server, who fixes it, and what do they restore from: a snapshot, a backup copy, or nothing at all?
  • Is there a console you can use when SSH or Remote Desktop stops responding?
  • Do snapshots and DDoS protection come bundled into the price, or cost extra?
  • Does support end at the platform and the network, or does it reach into the software you've put on the server?
  • Is the management fee charged per server each month, per support ticket, or bundled into the plan?

Running a self-managed VPS without trouble

  1. Deploy, then patch first

Launch the server using a Linux-based or Windows-based image, then install every pending operating system update right away, before any other setup step.

  2. Restrict access

On Linux, sign in using SSH keys and a regular user with sudo rights; on Windows, choose a strong administrator password. Restrict inbound access to just the ports your running application requires.

  3. Snapshot before risky changes

Before any upgrade or fresh install, capture a snapshot from the control panel, so you can roll back if the change goes wrong.

  4. Keep your data somewhere else too

A snapshot is not a proper backup. Store copies of your databases and files somewhere away from the server on a recurring basis — S3-compatible storage works well for this.

  5. Plan your way back in

If you're locked out, reach the server through the VNC console in the panel. When the system can't be salvaged, trigger a one-click reinstall of the OS and recover your data from your own copies afterward.

Questions on this guide

Is a NABHCLOUD VPS managed or unmanaged?

It is self-managed, giving you root or administrator access, a way into the console from your browser (VNC), one-click reinstall of the OS, and a free snapshot, along with support from our team for the platform, the network, and billing. Our automated setup assistant takes care of installing and setting up the usual stacks, at no extra cost.

What does an unmanaged VPS actually involve?

The provider keeps the hardware, the network, and the platform running; you take care of everything running inside that virtual machine — things like the operating system, software updates, security settings, and the applications you run.

Does an unmanaged VPS cost less than a managed one?

Generally yes, since a managed plan bundles in the provider's admin time. Current prices for our self-managed VPS, excluding GST, are shown on this page, and setup through our automated assistant carries no extra charge.

Can someone help me install software on a self-managed VPS?

Yes. Tell our automated setup assistant what you need, and it sets up stacks such as Docker, cPanel/WHM, IIS, LAMP/LEMP, WordPress, or MT4/MT5, then can pass you on to a human support engineer.

What happens if I lock myself out of my VPS?

Use the VNC console in the control panel to sign in when SSH or Remote Desktop isn't available. If the server can't be fixed, bring back a snapshot, or reinstall the OS with one click.

Do I get root access with an unmanaged VPS?

Yes. Linux machines hand you root access, and Windows machines give you administrator rights, so you're free to install any software and adjust any setting you like.

Can I rent a VPS on an hourly basis?

Yes. You're billed for whole hours used, with each server carrying a minimum charge of 1 hour. You can later switch the same server to monthly or longer-term billing.
