Installing LibreChat sets it up along with its database. The first person to register becomes the administrator of this app. This app needs the Pro plan, as it runs several services together behind the scenes.
LibreChat looks much like ChatGPT, but it can talk with multiple providers from the same place. One single conversation menu lets you switch between Anthropic, Google, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or any other service you configure. Under the hood, Node.js runs the app, MongoDB stores its data, and the MIT licence covers the whole project. Port 3080 is where the browser interface listens for requests. Meilisearch handles search across past conversations, and a separate retrieval service manages question-and-answer over uploaded files.
You set up custom endpoints in a file called librechat.yaml, each with its own name, baseURL, apiKey and set of model names. This is where you would add any OpenAI-compatible service you want to connect. The actual keys should sit in the .env file, or better still, in the provider key field so each person can supply their own. Avoid putting real secret keys into a YAML file that lives in a Git repository.
By default, anyone can register, and whoever signs up first becomes the administrator, so make sure you create your account before anyone else does. Once your team is on board, consider turning registration off and inviting people individually instead. Keep in mind the memory footprint: running Node, MongoDB and Meilisearch together is why this app needs a larger plan than most others.
